Now the deal in my house is that we don’t watch a whole lot of TV. And I am allergic to commercials. I was raised in a household where I didn’t have a TV until I was 11 deprived I know and when we did, we always turned the sound down on the adverts. In our case because we didn’t have remotes, this meant getting up to do it. I know. Seriously deprived!
In addition, I am pretty old fashioned when it comes to my kids viewing. I am not persuaded that TV viewing adds a great deal of value to their lives so I am judicious when it comes to letting them see various programmes. This leads to the inevitable tantrums as you can imagine, but I remind them that one day they will be old enough to buy their own, but until that day comes….
I digress
Mr Small was feverish and unwell earlier this week which means that all bets are off when it comes to my TV rules. So the arrival of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Choo-Choo Express was a delightful surprise. In particular, as it was a DVD it meant no commercials which makes me very happy.
We sat together, happily snuggled on the couch watching it. It centres around the gang moving Easy Freezy Snow, a snow that never melts, even in the sun (I know!) and uses time-telling, reading a schedule, counting, and shape identification in the process. (This appealed to the teacherly side of me as you can imagine) I am a huge fan of learning through play and this DVD does that for sure. There is also a bonus episode, "Mickey's Big Job," and this finds Mickey and the gang heading up into the clouds to take care of Willy the Giant's farm, and includes counting and sorting by size. As well as this there is also an episode from “Handy Manny.”
Perfect for 2-6 year olds feverish or not and given the inclement weather these days it is a worthwhile addition to the family DVD library
