Carrying on with my recent theme of recognizing environmental leadership in whatever form it takes, Wal-Mart announced aggressive new plans to move towards greater sustainability in all operations. Their plan focuses on three primary goals:

1) reducing waste to zero
2) moving towards the exclusive use of renewable energy and
3) offering more environmentally sensitive products

Included in the plans are new store designs boasting 30% to 50% gains in energy efficiency. As was the case with their commitment to expand organic food selection, Wal-Mart's market clout will be a huge boost to sustainable practices and energy efficiency throughout the retail sector. Their plans have gained Al Gore's attention. Let's hope they follow through.
