The topic for news this week is 'When I grow up I'd like to be....'
Not unnaturally this has prompted much angst for Miss Medium who has flitted between wanting to be a dress up fairy for children's parties, through to a famous artist who draws flowers.
Warms the heart doesn't it?
So yesterday we sat together working out which career path to choose as my other son navigated the perils of his times tables.
In desperation I asked her what the other children had talked about. All fairly standard career paths.
Then she mentioned *Freddy.*
Freddy apparently wants to be a robber when he grows up and to steal stuff and do graffiti.
While I calmly made a mental note that to suggest to her teacher she might want to check these talks first, I then had to answer some very awkward questions.
You know, what 'tagging' is, why do robbers steal stuff? will they steal our stuff? and the pearler 'Mum I'm scared of robbers.'
Having experienced various burglaries as a child, I'm not wild about them either.
Thanks Freddy.
And then Miss Medium announced she'd changed her mind.
Again.
Inwardly I prayed it wasn't to be a hooker or something else equally wondrous.
Nope.
Ballerina apparently.
Judging from what I've read about 'Black Swan' I think I'd prefer her to be a robber.

She's always been obsessed with pink and purple and all things sparkly. It's not a tendency I encouraged, it's just what she likes.
Secretly, I love the fact that she's such a girly girl. Growing up surrounded by testosterone myself, my love of all things pink and sparkly went largely unnoticed.
And of course, she walks on her tippy toes. Everywhere. I had her checked by our GP and Physio just to ensure it wasn't and wouldn't be a problem. But it wasn't. Still isn't.
Until now.
You see her school uniform is blue.
And she has to wear those black, clunky school shoes.
Seriously, why haven't these evolved since I was at school? The only point of difference between hers and mine is that mine were brown.
Like my uniform.
I know.
So I privately wondered how she would adjust to the fact that she will a) be wearing a BLUE uniform and b) clunky shoes that won't let her walk on her tippy toes.
Yesterday, she excitedly tried on her new uniform in the little change-room I must admit I bit back tears. Because she was just so damn excited about it all. She picked out all the requisite blue accessories, the hair clips, the hair bands and the ribbons.
And she tried on school shoes yesterday without a murmur.
This morning her first request was to label her uniform and to polish her shoes. And so we removed all the labels and they are running through the washing machine as I write.
In the meantime Miss Medium regularly updates me with just how long the washing cycle has left before I can hang her "new clothes" out to dry.
And I realised that's what makes her so special in my eyes. This new journey as a school-girl is one that fills her with excitement.
She's not worried about wearing blue and not being able to walk on her tippy-toes.
No.
She's excited about growing up.
And I'm going to miss my fairy princess. But I think I'm going to love my school girl even more, if such a thing is possible.
