It was a very hot and humid Easter Sunday where we were. The hotel staff were manfully gathering together hordes of overheated and overexcited children. The first activity we were informed, was the Easter basket decorating exercise.
The older children groaned.
They were far “too cool” for this exercise apparently. The younger ones caught up in the fun, ignored their disdain, as did the parents.
Baskets were handed out, one per family, and off we set exploring the hotel grounds.
Eager little hands grabbed up fallen leaves and petals. A startled and unsuspecting frog found himself in one small child’s basket until a wise parent gently released it back into its habitat.
I watched Mr Large and Miss Medium earnestly argue about which leaves were more suitable, while Mr Small snatched up handfuls of leaves thrusting them into his basket only for them to fall out minutes later in his excitement.
Back at the entrance again small groups began the task of decorating.

Whilst I was thrilled to see my own little clan’s joy in making our basket as lovely as possible, it was also interesting to note the older children’s behaviour.
Gone was all the faux coolness.
Instead there were heated discussions about where petals would be best placed, and how the leaves should be entwined with the handle of the basket. The boys were vociferous in their opinions as to what was the most appealing arrangement.
It was lovely to see.
Children I’d seen squabbling poolside with their parents on a daily basis were happily chatting with them describing earnestly why they HAD to use THIS flower or THAT banana leaf.
Kids, leaves, petals and a basket.
It’s a recipe for fun.
I know sometimes I get too caught up in ensuring my children are “occupied.” And really it isn’t complicated.
It’s the simple things that are often the most fun.
