Extinct for more than a century, wolves have returned to Eastern Germany. The population now numbers 20 and is thought to have migrated from growing populations in Poland and Slovakia to take up their current residence in vacated industrial and military sites.

The German wolves join their brethren in Italy, Austria, France and the Baltic states who have also rebounded from the brink of extinction, while Germany has also been seeing an a comeback in the crane and the white-tailed eagle.
